AceMon's Monitoring Features

Depending on the particular hosts and services being monitored, verifications can occur in several ways due to the variety of features available. These include:

  • Monitoring of network services, such as SMTP, POP3, HTTP, PING, etc., and host resources, such as processor load, disk and memory usage, running processes, log files, etc., as well as environmental factors like temperature changes
  • Basic server processes can be checked via TCP to determine if they are responding to connection requests
  • Complex server processes may have specific auto-interactive checks, as well as custom-scripted checks, to determine functionality
  • Easy-to-use plug-ins allow the parameters for each service check to be set individually, as well as the frequency of each check
  • Host hierarchy definitions allow for the detection of hosts that are down versus those that are simply unreachable
  • Web-browser-based interface that allows for on-the-fly changes to be made to the monitoring system
  • Intelligent monitoring - alerts are sent regarding only node outages, not all of the hosts attached to it
  • Scheduled downtimes can be created for both hosts and services, even individually, during which time false alerts will not be generated
  • Notifications are sent when problems occur, as well as when they are resolved, via email, pager, etc. With the possibility of attaching a graphic of the last 24h

Real-time Traffic Analysis

AceMon's real-time traffic analysis verifies all network traffic in real-time, and then displays the results in a series of user-friendly, easy to interpret, reports.

  • Displays in-depth textual and graphical information on protocols which are displayed at each layer, including overall packet statistics, and network loads
  • A breakdown of every host that has communicated on the network within the past 24 hours (internally and externally)
  • Pertinent information about each host, including its IP and MAC address, physical location, and potential security / configuration issues
  • Passively identify the host operating system
  • Detailed packet and connection statistics for each host, including bandwidth usage (by time of day), TCP connections and flags, protocol distribution at each layer, and current and active TCP sessions
  • If the host is using a P2P application (Kazaa, Limewire, etc.), the files which are being transferred will be displayed
  • A breakdown of every host, as above, but sorted by protocol (TCP, UDP, AppleTalk, etc).

Trends, Graphs, and Reports
  • Availability and uptime reports are generated for each host or service
  • Alert statistics and history
  • Daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly graphical trends
  • Historical data related to the host and service monitors is archived for up to three years

Network and Service Scans

AceMon is a powerful diagnostic tool which searches for every active device on a given network or segment.

  • Each device may be scanned to determine which ports (services) are running
  • Services can be probed for further information, such as name and version number
  • Generic and "server type" specific checks
  • Checks for outdated server software
  • Multiple IDS evasion techniques
  • Multiple host/port scanning mechanisms (both TCP and UDP)

Vulnerability Scans

AceMon's automated scans detect potential security issues on the network - four of most well-known and referenced vulnerability databases are used - CERT, SANS, Packetstorm, and Debian (Linux)

  • Vulnerabilities can be detected on a variety of systems and platforms, including Windows 95 through to 2003, Linux, and Sun Solaris.
  • Can adapt to many firewalled environments
  • Networked devices, such as printers and routers, can also be scanned for vulnerabilities and exploits

Scans can be performed using one of three unique methods:

  • General scan: generates graphical information, including charts - provides an executive overview of the potential security issues detected
  • Intensive scan: generates test-based, fully detailed reports - includes descriptions of detected issues with known solution(s)
  • Web-server specific scan: targets web services exclusively - can locate known vulnerabilities, general configuration problems, and other issues

Event Log and Syslog Aggregation

Windows event logs, such as any Syslog-compatible logs, may be aggregated (compiled) on AceMon itself in real-time.

  • All logs are stored on AceMon
  • Logs can be viewed in the raw, or filtered based on severity level
  • Customized filters can be created for viewing logs
  • Groups of logs can be viewed at the same time by filter, which allows immediate identification of all critical events across the network

AceMon Ticket Tracker (Enterprise Helpdesk)

AceMon contains a powerful ticketing system, which enables an organisation to efficiently manage issues, tasks, and service requests. It is based on a users, groups, and queues which can be customized extensively.

  • Easy to submit, assign, prioritize, search, escalate, and report on issues
  • Highly extensible and scalable: can be used solely by the technical team, or enterprise-wide
  • Tracks critical system metadata, including time spent per action, due dates, and estimated time to completion
  • Highly customizable interface
  • Secure: Can be synchronized with LDAP to simplify login
  • May also be used as a stand-alone package
  • Easy to install; Your existing web browser and email clients are all you need
  • AceMon TT stores all its data inside an mySQL database, so you can use Crystal ReportsTM and similar tools to generate precise reports
